In the book of Ezekiel, God tells Ezekiel to prophesy over the dry bones so he could bring forth life into them (see Ezekiel 37:1-14).
This passage made us think of the seasons of dryness in marriage. Everyone goes through them! When you and your spouse just don’t seem to be on the same page. When one or both of you are dealing with some hard stuff. When you both feel the weight of the cross, and you’re not sure how to help each other when you can’t even help yourself.
But just like God brought life into those dry bones, he can do the same in your marriage...if you do what he is asking. The dry bones came to life because God asked Ezekiel to prophesy, and he listened!
“So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold, a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to its bone.” -Ezekiel 37:7
What is God asking you to do in your marriage right now? Has he been prompting you to love your spouse more? To say no to certain endeavors so you can dedicate more time for just the two of you? To go to therapy? To fast for your spouse?
Asking God to breathe life into your marriage is important, but this is a reminder that we also have to do our part. A garden produces fruit based on how much it is tended to, and the same goes for a marriage. When we garden, there is planting, watering, pruning, and more. Sometimes we think a plant has died but really it just needs more care, like sunlight or water. A marriage is similar! Our marriage requires constant care. If you’re in a season of dryness in your marriage, ask God for guidance… and then “do whatever He tells you” (see John 2:5), just like Ezekiel did.
“I will put my spirit in you that you may live,
and I will settle you upon your land;
thus you shall know that I am the LORD.
I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.” - Ezekiel 37:14
