I wanted an image for my own devotion that was a little more natural than the few formal photographs we have of these two amazing souls. So I sketched this image of the two of them, attempting to convey the joy and closeness they had – particularly Louis’ admiration and love for his beautiful bride.
St. Zélie Martin and St. Louis Martin, parents of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, were the first married couple to be jointly canonized. Zélie was a skilled lacemaker and businesswoman, while Louis was a watchmaker. Zélie’s business became so successful that Louis eventually sold his watchmaking business to go into partnership with her. ❤️
They both deeply loved God, and each sought a religious vocation before meeting one another. As a married couple, they faced many challenges, including the heartbreaking loss of several children in infancy. Despite their suffering, Zélie and Louis remained steadfast in their trust in God. Their marriage was marked by a profound love and unity, centered on their shared commitment to holiness. Zélie and Louis dedicated themselves to raising their surviving daughters in a loving and faith-filled environment. Zélie’s health declined, and she passed away from breast cancer at the age of 45, leaving Louis to care for their five daughters. All five of the Martin’s surviving daughters entered religious life. Both Zélie and Louis were canonized as saints in 2015.
Their feast day is July 12.
Their witness of holy marriage and family life inspires me daily. Sts. Zelie and Louis, pray for us!
