“Deus vult” the Latin war cry is more than just a phrase shouted on in the midst of ferocious battle.

It is a reminder that we must repeat to ourselves daily.

God wills it, Deus vult. Because all things in our lives are either permitted, or willed by God. And if it is permitted, it is His will for us to endure through Him.

Very much like the stoics “amor fati” or “love of ones fate” we much come to accept our circumstances, whatever they may be, as the will of God. No matter the pain. No matter the loss. No matter the struggle. God wills it.

Think of Mary, and her sorrows. She knew from the prophecy of Simeon, what her son would suffer. Her own life, a living martyrdom for knowing this fact. In her sorrow, in her pain, she did not try to stay the execution. She did not throw herself at the cross. She suffered, and she knew, “God wills it.” As swords pierced her own heart.

Find strength in whispering that phrase. Acknowledge that this is just part of the journey, and your Shepard is leading and protecting you for something much greater.

The more you unify your will to Gods, the more peaceful life becomes… Deus vult.
